'the carrier must be generated within a diffusion length of the junction' what does this statement means? i cannot visualize this. could someone break this line for me? thank you!!

Excess carriers generated by light travel for a minority carrier diffusion length before recombining. If they reach the pn-junction (also known as the depletion region) before recombining they are collected and contribute to the electrical output of the cell. The objective is to get the minority carriers across the junction before the recombine.
The diffusion length is a weighted average. Some carriers go slightly longer than a diffusion length and some travel slightly shorter.
